Description: The Lowchen breed is also called the little lion and its coat is cut to enhance that look. It is part of the small breed dogs and stands at 10 to 13 inches in height and weighs in at 9 to 18 pounds. It lives to about 14 years. The head is short but has a broad skull. With the muzzle, the same length or a touch shorted than the rear of the skull, this is broad to look at. The Lowchen nose is dark in colour and most commonly black. The eyes are set well into the skull and are round and dark. The ears are pendent with feathering and of a moderate length. They have a short body, with a high set tail that is medium in length. This breed has a long coat that is not curly but has a slight wavy look. Colours we see are, black and lemon, or white we also see speckled colouring.

History: The Lőwchen came from Europe from about 1610. This breed is thought to be from Germany due to its name meaning “Little lion”. It has always been groomed to look like a little lion. It was used as a foot warmer, by the ladies of the time. There are pictures showing this dog, going back as far as 1500′s but the breed is not clear and there can be confusion around as to whether these pictures are of the Bicon, or the Lőwchen. After the two World Wars numbers had dropped considerably and it was noted, in the Guinness book of records in the 60′s, as the rarest breed. Although more dogs are around today this is still seen as a rare breed of dog.

Temperament: Here is a dog that is sociable and affectionate. This dog shows good intelligence and is a quick learner. With a fearless attitude, they are sensitive but gentle, as well. This breed is good with children and will love to play with them. They are good with other pets within the home. The Lőwchen can be strong willed, if good leadership and the human being the alpha is not present. The males of this breed are very likely to challenge other dogs in the home for leadership, regardless of size. This dog needs firm, good, leadership to gain the best from the breed. With consistent good leadership this breed does well. This will allow the Lowchen dog to not suffer from small dog syndrome.

Health issues: Some blood lines are prone to patellar luxation but over all it is a good healthy breed.

Grooming: The Lőwchen’s, small lion, cut is best done at a saloon at first for you to see how this is done. At home the coat should be brushed daily to maintain the over all good looks. It is also fine to have this dog cut in the puppy look. As a low shedder the dog does need brushing to get out any dead hair.

Living conditions: Here is a dog that is good for apartment life providing, they have good daily, and uses their mental and physical energy. A Lőwchen will love a small to medium size garden that is well fenced for safety.

How to Train Your Dog?

<!– @page { margin: 2cm } P { margin-bottom: 0.21cm } –>

Training for dogs is a wonderful way to develop the natural bond between human beings and dogs. All dogs offer the same basic level of understanding and ability to learn. The hardest part of dogs training is communicating with the dog in a humane way that the dog understands. One needs to communicate verbally or with nonverbal signals while dog training. The training dog is to perform certain actions in response to certain commands which the dog is trained to understand. Dogs are expressive, and are required to have training for dog biting, toilet training puppies.

Basic dog training obedience usually consists of six behaviours. The dog training will be rewarding and enjoyable experience only with consistency and hard-work. The first step in making sure your dog is well behaved is to make sure they are trained properly.

Most dogs live with people who want them to behave in ways that make them pleasant to be around, keep them safe, and provides for the safety of other people. Dogs do not follow obedience by nature but need specific dog training for obedience. Dogs do not generalize commands easily. To be more effective, the training for dogs must use and reinforce the techniques taught to the dog.

There are many dog training techniques and many dog training methods that include search and rescue dog, hunting, assistance to people with disability, law enforcement, and military need. The dogs training which are taught indoor must be practiced outdoor in a different situation i.e command needs to be re-taught in each situation. Hence, the dog has to apply what’s been learned during dogs training to many different contexts.

Better to start dog training for a dog soon you get it. Puppy training can start training at a very young age (6-8 weeks old) and it is considered that Puppy brains are like sponges just waiting to absorb all kinds of knowledge and training.

Hematoma on Dogs

A hematoma (found in a dog’s ear) is the swelling of the earflap that results from some type of injury. As the small blood vessels in the cartilage of the ear burst and bleed, the hematoma forms as a hard, fluid-filled swelling. Many dogs who suffer from this condition, have a history of infections or problems with their ears. A dog will typically form a hematoma form shaking his head or scratching his head due to an underlying ear disease or allergy. The formation of a hematoma can happen in just hours of the swelling in the ear’s inner surface.

Ear hematomas are very common is dogs with floppy ears, such as spaniels, setters and hounds and occur less often in dogs with erect ears. They can occur in dogs of all ages and are seen more common in humid, hot climate than in areas that are cold and dry. Other dogs may get hematomas but as a secondary condition that is caused by an ear infection, ear mites, wax build up or some other ear problem.

There are many different methods for treating hematomas; the approach will be determined by the severity of the condition. Methods/treatments include:

1. Placing a drain (teat cannula) into the ear tip for ear for draining.
2. Making a surgical incision into the ear where the swelling is occurring, which allows for drainage of the fluid.
3. A cortisone product taken orally to help ease the pain of the itching as well as scarring.
4. Antibiotics given to treat any underlying problem and infection prevention.
The failure of treating a hematoma may lead to ongoing swelling that will encompass the whole earflap. Scar tissue formed in the hematoma results in a wrinkled and thickened earflap that may predispose a dog to even more ear problems.

Treating a dog’s hematoma can sometimes get expensive. If it was caused from an injury when playing or fighting with another dog, antibiotics will also need to be given with treatment. Together this will cost around two hundred dollars given that the vet will give the dog medicine for pain, steroids and antibiotics. Placing a tube in the ear to drain the fluid is less expensive, unless the dog needs sedation. If extensive surgery is the best option for the dog, this could cost anywhere between $200 and $300 plus any pre-anesthetic testing that will be needed.

The price of treating a dog’s hematoma will all vary with depending on what the dog needs, what types and levels of medication the clinic practices as well as the geographic area.

It is very important to take a dog to the vet right away if a hematoma occurs due to the fact that most are caused by an underlying issue, such as infection. Treating the main problem is vital in fixing the problem. A smaller hematoma will usually heal on its own, but if the underlying issue is not treated, hematomas will continue to form.
